When it comes to free museums, most people think of Washington DC. You may be surprised to learn that Maryland has a handful of them as well, and they're one of a kind. Here are just 7 of them to start with. How many did you know about?
1. National Museum of Health and Medicine (Silver Spring)
This hidden gem started as an Army Medical Museum during the Civil War. Now, its collection has expanded to include medical oddities, disease, and more. All sorts of human bones and organs are on display, making for a fascinating (yet somewhat morbid) museum trip.
Address: 2500 Linden Ln, Silver Spring, MD 20910
2. The Baltimore Museum of Art (Baltimore)
sculpture garden
This museum could rival some of the great art collections in DC. There are permanent exhibits that include 19th-century, modern, and contemporary art. Or stay up to date with their temporary events and exhibitions to keep things interesting. During warmer weather, stroll around the sculpture garden out back.
Address: 10 Art Museum Dr, Baltimore, MD 21218
3. Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park (Annapolis)
Here, you can learn about the maritime heritage of the Annapolis area. Explore the exhibits and lighthouse or partake in a guided tour for even more knowledge. This museum has a great location right next to the water, adding a bit of scenery and bay breeze to your visit.
Address: 723 2nd St, Annapolis, MD 21403
4. Washington County Museum of Fine Arts (Hagerstown)
This museum is a gem of Hagerstown's City Park. Paintings, sculptures, and more await, from abstract works to landscapes. You can find a little bit of everything here and the setting can't be beat.
Address: 401 Museum Dr, Hagerstown, MD 21741
5. Baltimore & Ohio Ellicott City Station Museum (Ellicott City)
This is just one of Maryland's railroad museums and it's nestled in historic Ellicott City. Established in 1830, it's the oldest surviving railroad station in the United States. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Address: 3711 Maryland Ave, Ellicott City, MD 21043
6. U.S. Naval Academy Museum (Annapolis)
Located at the Naval Academy, this museum offers two floors of exhibits. Learn about the development of the US Navy and see intricate ship models up close. Both children and adults tend to love this one.
Address: 118 Maryland Ave, Annapolis, MD 21402
7. The Walters Art Museum (Baltimore)
This museum houses a wide range of items from all over the world, including paintings, weapons, and other artifacts. The permanent collections and temporary exhibits are always fascinating. This place has an atmosphere unlike most other art museums you'll find.
