As lakes go, Maine certainly has some of the best. While we can't help but adore them all, some have a little something special that sets them apart from the rest. This one is a great example. Surprising in that it is a fairly large lake that is spring fed, it's also one of the clearest you'll find in the state! If you haven't already (and even if you have!), take a trip to Lake St. George State Park in Liberty, Maine.
Head first to the town of Liberty, a lovely place in Waldo County.
Then, make your way to Lake St. George State Park, one of our favorite but often forgotten gems in Vacationland.
The lake itself is about 1,000 acres and is special in that it's spring fed.
Being spring fed makes it much clearer than what you might expect in lake.
But it also makes this water very cold, so be prepared for a shock when you jump!
Beyond being spring fed and extremely clear, Maine wildlife is abundant here, including our favorite - the loon!
You can visit the incredible spring-fed lake year-round, from 9am to sunset. Those who want to make a week of it will love the campsites that surround the lake. If you're looking for a day trip, there are picnic tables and grills available just beyond the campsites.
Explorers will love the numerous islands that dot the main portion of the lake. Fishing is available, with access to Maine's landlocked salmon and brook trout.
