If you're a believer of the supernatural or paranormal, you might want to visit the little town of Skowhegan, Maine. It's supposedly the home of several haunted spots, and the stories of these places will give you goosebumps.
The pretty little town of Skowhegan sits on the banks of the Kennebec River, and it was settled in 1771.
A town this old is certain to have some ghosts, right? Whether you believe in the supernatural or not, some of the folks who live here can tell you some tales.
Many employees and some visitors report seeing the figure of a woman here, and those who work here late at night hear noises behind the movie screen and in the basement after the theater is closed.
Many think that it's the ghost of a woman who died in her apartment above the theater in the 1970s. They feel like she has an angry presence, and at least one employee has quit after experiencing paranormal activity there.
Once you've enjoyed a movie, some popcorn, and maybe a malevolent presence, take a drive to Lake George Regional Park.
This park is supposedly the site of many strange occurrences, as well. Some people say they've seen odd lights and orbs, and have heard noises they can't explain.
The park was established in 1992 when a property that was once a thriving summer camp came onto the market. The park covers 320 acres, and still includes a summer camp to this day.
The most common story about these cabins is that items inside them seem to be rearranged when no one is inside... and it happens in just moments. The story goes that some children walked up to the window of a cabin, and one peeked in and reported that there was a mostly empty room, with chairs folded up against the walls. When another child entered the cabin just moments later, there was a table with chairs set up around it... almost as though some ghostly presence was welcoming them.

It's no secret that there's a plethora of amazing small towns in Maine. Here in New England, we're all about those teeny towns and the pastoral landscapes dotted with farmland and historic white churches. If you're looking to enjoy a getaway in a small town in the Pine Tree State, you certainly have no shortage of options. One spot we're particularly fond of is Bridgton. This picturesque little town is home to just under 5,500 residents and is perhaps best known for being home to Bridgton Academy, a prestigious college preparatory school that's one of the country's oldest, having been founded in 1808. However, there's a lot more to Bridgton than the private school that shares its name, and we think it's just perfect for a visit, even if you've only got one day to explore.

Bridgton has no shortage of fun things to do, no matter where your interests lie. If you love architecture, simply walking through the town's historic district provides plenty to admire. Several homes throughout the town are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Benjamin Cleaves House (built in 1828) and the Lt. Robert Andrews House (built in 1805). Lovers of history will also want to check out the Bridgton Historical Society. The society's archives and exhibits are displayed in the town's old fire station.
If you're visiting in the winter and love the outdoors, definitely pay a visit to Pleasant Mountain. This ski area, once known as Shawnee Peak, primarily has intermediate and advanced trails, though there is a beginner area for novice skiers.
Of course, there's plenty to do outside at any time of year when you're in Maine. Bridgton's Pondicherry Park boasts 66 acres of forests, fields, and wetlands. You can check out some of the park's great trails from our friends at AllTrails.
When I'm traveling, I love enjoying a visit to local restaurants. Even if I am not feeling too hungry or don't have time for a full meal, just grabbing a coffee in a cafe is a great way to support small businesses while enjoying local culture. Bridgton offers up plenty of delicious places to dine. Morning Glory Diner has been serving townies diner-style breakfast since 1983. Looking for something a little more upscale? Stella's on the Square has made-from-scratch eats and live music on select days.
If you've got money burning a hole in your pocket, you'll find some wonderful boutique shops to support along Bridgton's Main Street. Corn Shop Trading Co is an old-fashioned country store with gifts, candles, holiday decor, and so much more. Firefly Boutique is just down the road and sells all the latest in women's fashion. If you love vintage, definitely pay a visit to The 207, a multi-seller collection of antique vendors that carries everything from jewelry to furniture.
As you can see, there's a lot to do in Bridgton, Maine, whether you're a fan of enjoying the outdoors or shopping and dining. This is a delightful little town that's definitely worthy of a visit, and even if you only have an afternoon to stop by, you'll find plenty to explore.
