While officially The Pine Tree State, Maine is more often affectionally referred to as Vacationland. And that's for good reason. There are hotels around every corner, for every budget and for every occasion. Any one of the overnight options is great, but the Cliff House offers something special. It's one of the most well-known, historic hotels in Maine.
The Cliff House in Cape Neddick is one of those places that most people in Maine have heard about, but it's not a place that everyone has stayed.
While it might not be accessible to every budget, it's fun to hear about some of the history.
The hotel dates back to 1866, just after the Civil War ended. Rail travel was becoming more important and the Boston and Maine Railroad was set to add a stop in York. Elsie Jane, wife of a local captain, purchased land on Bald Head Cliff and began the plans for a resort.
When the resort opened in 1872 a night was just $6!
Of course, over time things have changed a lot here. But the impressiveness and beauty are all the same.
Today there are 226 rooms sitting on about 70 acres of waterfront land.
Couple that with three restaurants and a cafe and you've got the makings of a fantastic time away in Maine!
The Cliff House is a great way to spend a few nights away. You can learn more about the property by visiting their website or you can follow them on Facebook. You can reach the hotel on (207) 361-1000.
Not far from The Cliff House is one of the friendliest towns in Maine which is perfect to visit the next time you need a pick-me-up!
