When your mind feels busy and current events have you anything but calm, it might be time to hop in the car for a road trip. There are quite a few deserving roads in Maine, but lately we've been on the hunt for some of the less-traveled routes. And, of course, we found one! Maine is great for long roads through beautiful scenery. This one might be new to you, but we encourage you to give it a try!
One of the most scenic roads in the state is US 1, but most people know this. That makes for packed roadways in the spring, summer and even fall.
That's why we like to head a bit more inland to Route 9.
You'll start your trip with homes and gas stations along the road. But eventually, you'll find yourself surrounded by just trees and sky.
Also known as the Airline Highway, this span of road runs from Bangor to Calais, taking you into Washington Country for an experience that most people who stick to the southern part of the state tend to miss out on.
When you reach Wesley, the road enters an area that opens up. You'll see lots of landscape here!
The route is pretty sparse rural, which means you probably won't get stuck in any traffic. That makes for some pretty wonderful driving conditions!
The route heads up toward Canada and there are plenty of places to stop and hike along the way. Make sure you've packed your Gazetteer to find some fun activities along the way.
And if Canada isn't your destination, go as far as you want and then simply turn around. You'll probably have a hard time pulling yourself out of this beautiful drive, but unless you want to cross the border you'll need to head back eventually.
And when you do, try to time it for sunset. You just won't find a view like this outside of rural Maine!
The entire drive is about 50 miles, but plan on stopping a few times for photos and to take in the peace and quiet. And, of course, always have a full tank of gas before any road trip on less-trafficked roads.
If hopping in the car and taking a road trip isn't something you can do right now, check out this video of someone else (youtube user takemytripdotcom) driving it!
