Today we're talking about a floating restaurant in Maine that's been a state tradition for as long as we can remember. No, it's not one of the new fancy places you'll find in other places in the state, but it's a restaurant that's become synonymous with waterfront views and good times!
DiMillo's on the Water has been a Portland, Maine tradition since 1965, moving to its current location on the water in 1982.
And it remains a family-run business with Tony's wife, sisters, and sons making sure that everything is managed to the standards set forth by Tony all those years ago.
In 1941, she was commissioned as "The New York" running as a car ferry between Delaware and New Jersey. It was sold multiple times throughout the years, finally landing n the hands of the DiMillo family in 1980.
Tourists come here for good reason and Mainers are lucky to have access to it year round.
Maine has a fantastic dining scene, with most of it crowded into top cities like Portland, Augusta, and Bangor. I've been to the Pine Tree State many times, and there's one thing I'll never leave without - a traditional lobster dinner. Lobster might as well be the official food of Maine, and there are plenty of spots across the state to get a great one. One of the best has to be Cook's Lobster and Ale House, an old-school seafood joint that looks like it's built into an old lobster pound. You'll find this hidden gem on Bailey Island, which is well off the coast. However, this island restaurant in Maine is well worth the visit. Not only will you get some amazing food here, but you'll be in one of the most beautiful spots in the northeast.
A day on Bailey Island is an incredible adventure, bringing you up to the Atlantic off the coast of Maine. You'll find incredible hikes, beautiful vistas, and one of the most peaceful beaches in the state. And after a day of hiking, you'll have worked up an appetite.
Cook's Lobster and Ale House has been an institution on Bailey Island for more than 60 years. This laid-back but classy seafood joint is one of the best spots in the state for a seafood dinner, and during the offseason, the crowds are usually pretty light.

Seafood is the specialty here. Some of the signature items include lobster rolls overflowing with meaty, fried whole-belly clams that are among the best in the state, and a baked stuffed haddock that is perfectly New England.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L.
