The coast of southern Maine is one of our favorite spots in the state. It's beautiful in the summer, but spring brings its own type of fun.
The annual May Day Festival in Kennebunk is something we look forward to as soon as the first leaf appears on a tree. The perfect entry into spring, this is a day you won't want to miss.
And don't worry about forgetting it's coming up. The town gets so excited about it, there's a good chance you'll be hearing about it for weeks in advance!
The full day of activities starts with the town pancake breakfast.
The farmers' market is in full-swing from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., along with live music, fun workshops and crafts taking place throughout the day. And, with the backdrop of one of our favorite towns, you can't possibly have a bad time.
We especially love the parade which begins around 1:30 p.m. most years. It feels like every local organization is involved in the parade and both kids and adults get in on the fun. Staking out a spot early in the morning is the best way to ensure the best view!
The May Day Festival in Kennebunk is held every year, typically on the first Saturday in May. For 2024, the happenings are taking place on May 4. Be sure to check out the full schedule on the City of Kennebunk Facebook page or its website, and keep checking back as new events and vendors are added!
Once you attend the event, you'll see why it's one of our favorite spring festivals in Maine, and there's a good chance you'll want to make this charming town a mainstay on your must-visit list for the rest of the season. Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. Why I Love It: Fact: Airplanes are notoriously dry, dry, dry. No matter how much water I drink both before and during the flight, I always find myself in a hydration deficit for days. This might be the best fall festival near Portland, Maine. Picturesque Freeport is cute as a button and home to L.L. Bean, a mega-brand that has kept Mainers warm since 1912. The Freeport Fall Festival is hosted on the L.L. Bean campus and offers delicious food, rocking music, and over 200 vendors, including food purveyors, craftspeople, and local artists. It's a great way to celebrate fall in Maine. While you're here, you can also go shopping for some L.L. Bean gear!

3. North American Wife Carrying Championship, Oct. 12, 2024
We're all familiar with the trope of the suave groom sweeping his new bride over their threshold and into wedded bliss. The fine folks at Sunday Resort in Newry, Maine, would argue that they simply took this concept to its logical conclusion at the North American Wife Carrying Championship.
In this absurdist 278-yard dash, husbands haul their spouses over hurdles, up hills of slipping sand, and through a mud pit. The entry fee for couples is $70. The reward? The wife's weight in beer and five times her weight in cash! Luckily for us, spectating this outrageous and hilarious event is free. It's one of those Maine fall festivals you have to see in person to believe!
This Portland staple celebrates all that's stupendous about Mainer cuisine. And, as it turns out, there's a lot to celebrate. Portland's gastronomic excellence has won international acclaim. In the States, it's been named The Foodiest Small Town in America and the Restaurant City of the Year! Though one event can't possibly encompass every permutation of Maine's culinary tradition, Harvest on the Harbor gets about as close as any food festival could hope. That's why we think that this seasonal bonanza is mandatory for foodies.
Bangor's Maine Harvest Festival might be the best fall event near Bar Harbor. This large-scale bash shines a well-deserved spotlight on the artisanal creations of Penobscot County, both edible and artistic. Feed your stomach and your creativity at this delightful exhibition of Mainer talent. My favorite part? This year's sponsor is Maine's Potatoes. If a gathering receives Big Potato's blessing, it immediately becomes an iconic fall festival near me.
