It's time to start planning meals! And we don't mean the kind you cook yourself. Restaurants new and old have made their way into the hearts of Mainers this year and if you haven’t been motivated to try them out yet, 2020 is your year! We’ve gathered a few of our favorites here, but that there are plenty of others worth visiting. So, make your way to these and then tell us what we missed so we can do some of our own exploration in 2020.
1. Hodgman's Frozen Custard, New Gloucester
This little ice cream stand is the thing summer dreams are made of. Owned by the Hodgman family since the 1940s, the recipe here has been perfected for more than 9 decades. Come for a simple cone or get something more elaborate. Just be sure you've saved room to try everyone else's!
2. The Coplin Dinner House, Stratton
The meals found on the menu in this converted farmhouse are seasonal with a focus on local ingredients whenever possible. That means one of the most Mainey meals you can imagine! While the seafood comes straight from the Gulf of Maine and they raise their own pigs and goats, it's the steak we absolutely love!
3. Cowbell Burger Bar, Biddeford
This upscale burger spot has more than just quicky bites to take on the road. In fact, they serve over 25 different specialty burgers featuring beef, bison, salmon, and more. In addition to the 25 burgers you'll find on the menu, you can also create your own version to enjoy double the number of varieties. And, of course, the best way to enjoy a burger is with a beer. And, wouldn't you know it... they've got 25 on tap!
4. Dysart's, Bangor and Hermon
We know, we know. This is certainly not a new spot to try in Maine, but if you haven't been maybe 2020 is finally the year to make the trip to this Maine institution. With huge portions, good prices and round-the-clock serving you can't really go wrong.
The A1 Diner is a Maine classic that exists inside a vintage train car. But a regular diner menu is not what you'll find. In addition to the classics you might expect, you can dig into things like these Korean BBQ sliders. Get there early, this place is popular!
6. Bogusha's Restaurant & Deli, Portland
The pierogies at this special little spot are made by hand and enjoyed by locals all year. In addition to being a lovely little restaurant, Bogusha's is also a market allowing you to bring the flavors of the old world back home with you.
Clearly we're focused on steak this year and for good reason. Maine offers some of the best! Stop into The Steakhouse for cozy vibes in a setting that feels a lot like a wintertime camp in the forest. Enjoy Prime and Choice corn-fed heavy western beef with a side of everything delicious.
As one of the most quintessentially "Maine" restaurants you can visit in the state, this spot is a must-see. The views are incredible, but the inventive menu is just a grand. Try the seafood dishes, but also dig into things like steak and chicken.
A veritable institution of Maine, this is another spot you'll want to try and try again in 2020. Even if you've already been there. Enjoy any of the pies, but remember that they have an extensive menu of things like chicken fingers, sandwiches and pasta.
Hungry? You can eat unlimited sushi for under $14 at this spot in Maine.
