With over 600,000 acres and endless trails to explore, the Kisatchie National Forest is a true paradise for nature lovers. Louisiana’s only National Forest is a great place for the weekend warrior to spend a few days trekking through the rolling hills and longleaf pines, and there’s one trail, in particular, that’s so beautiful, you might just find yourself wanting to pitch a tent so you can immerse yourself in some of the most stunning natural scenery the Pelican State has to offer.
When you want to get away from it all, Valentine Lake is a great option.
Located in the tiny town of Elmer, the Valentine Lake Recreation Complex is a hidden gem in the Kisatchie that features a 1.8-mile loop trail near the lake.
The primitive trail will take you through a canopy of towering pines and lake views.
A good portion of the loop trail runs along the lake, giving you mesmerizing views of Valentine Lake.
The trail is good for all skill levels, so bring the whole family out for some adventure.
You can even bring your dog, just remember to keep them on their leash. While not very common, the occasional black bear has been sighted around this area, so keep your eyes peeled and remember to never feed the wildlife.
With views like this, it's hard to leave...
...luckily, you can always pitch a tent and spend a night camping under the stars!
Pure paradise, right? There are two campsites nestled around the lake, the recreation complex and Valentine Lake North Campground. Both are great options for a memorable weekend of roughing it!
