Back again for another year of spooky fun, the Rougarou Fest is one of the best costume parties in the United States. On October 26 & 27, break out your best outfits and bring the whole family down to Houma, where you’ll have quite the time celebrating all things Cajun - including the Rougarou.
The Rougarou has been a part of Cajun folklore for centuries.
This mythical creature lurks in the swamps and is described as having the head of a wolf with the body of a human. Often used as a cautionary tale to keep children obedient, if you grew up around the bayous of southern Louisiana, you’ve probably heard a story or two about this Cajun swamp thing. Since Louisiana loves to throw a festival for just about anything, it makes sense that we would celebrate the Rougarou.
The Rougarou Fest takes place October 26 & 27 this year, and you’re not going to want to miss it.
The family-friendly festival celebrates all things Louisiana, from the food to the folklore.

Kicking off at 7 p.m. on October 26, Krewe Ga Rou marches down the street in some of the most spectacular costumes you've ever seen.
Speaking of costumes, be sure to come dressed in yours!
USA Today ranked the Rougarou Fest as one of the top 10 costume parties in the country, and you can join in the fun and compete in the contest. Registration begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 26, and the contest begins at 4 p.m. There are multiple categories you can enter, including ones for kids and pets.
The festival is also pet-friendly, so bring your four-legged friend out to partake in the fun.
You can also dress your pup up and enter them in the pet costume contest! The Rougarou Fest partners up with Petco to host a pet adoption event, so if you’re looking for your new best friend, you might just find them right here.
All proceeds from the festival to towards the South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center.
This non-profit organization focuses on Louisiana’s disappearing coastline and seeks to educate the public about ways to prevent further erosion, so be sure to mark your calendars to bring the whole family out to this unique festival.
