Here in Louisiana, it's not uncommon for businesses to choose to keep older buildings rather than build something brand new. There are countless restaurants in Louisiana that have fascinating histories, and Restaurant Cotton is a perfect example.
You'll find Restaurant Cotton snuggled up against the Ouachita River in downtown Monroe.
This waterfront restaurant in Louisiana has been open since 2008, but the building has a much older history.
The building was erected in 1893 and over the next century, many businesses came and went.
If these walls could talk, they'd tell you all about their days as a cotton exchange, cafeteria, a bookstore, and even a mail-order liquor service.
During Prohibition, people had to get creative. While purchasing alcohol in person was illegal, it was not illegal to mail it...so naturally, someone had the bright idea to sell liquor through the mail, which was completely legal.
Its proximity to the Ouachita River made it a perfect spot for a cotton exchange.
Today, it's a beautiful spot to enjoy a meal with a lovely view!
The menu at Restaurant Cotton is a blend of both Southern and Louisiana cuisines.
Southern Delta at its finest.
The menu changes seasonally, but you can always count on hearty staples like burgers these juicy burgers.
Paired with duck fat fries, this is one meal that will make you feel like royalty.
Restaurant Cotton is also open for weekend brunch.
From a simple breakfast plate to more hearty options like shrimp and grits and roast beef Benedict, this is one brunch worthy of waking up early for. Brunch is served every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and reservations are strongly recommended, so be sure to call ahead.
