With a population that hovers just under 1,000 residents, you could safely say Grand Coteau is a small town. Located in St. Landry Parish, this tiny town in the heart of Cajun Country is home to one of the sweetest festivals in Louisiana, the Sweet Dough Pie Festival. Mark your calendars, this is one Louisiana festival you don’t want to miss!
So, what exactly is a sweet dough pie?
Sweet dough pies can be found all over Louisiana, they frequent bakeries and gas station counters all over the Pelican State. Every household has its own recipe (usually one that’s been passed down the family tree) but the basics are all the same: a sweet dough baked with seasonal fruit. Figs are the traditional filling, but it’s not uncommon to see strawberry, peach, blackberry, or any combination for a unique twist on a traditional classic.
Grand Coteau happens to be the Sweet Dough Pie Capital of the World, so it makes sense that this charming little town plays host to the festival.
The festival takes place on Saturday, October 29, 2022, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. right next to Town Hall.
In the event of rain, a weather delay date has been set for November 12, 2022.
There will be several tents peppering the grounds, each one offering its own unique sweet dough pies.
There will also be tons of homemade jams, jellies, and preserves to stock up on.
Everyone from the community comes together for the day. In addition to sweet dough pies and homemade preserves, local artists will also be displaying their crafts.
From home decor to wind chimes, there's a little bit of everything. These are perfect for getting some unique holiday gifts while supporting local businesses!
Be sure to follow the Sweet Dough Pie Festival on Facebook so you don't miss any updates as we approach the date. If you're looking for lodging, these cottages in Breaux Bridge are perfect and close to the festival.
