Were you in New Orleans in the 1980s? If so, then you remember what an interesting time it truly was. Here are some of the most stand-out events and characters and places in New Orleans in the 1980s. If you have any others---feel free to add them to the mix!
1) The Oil Bust
Oil production was cut nearly in half in the late 1980s, creating a ripple effect in New Orleans that changed the landscape and economy of the city forever.
2) Paul Prudhomme and Emeril Lagasse
Just as the concept of the celebrity chef was being developed, these amazing chefs came onto the scene and changed New Orleans dining forever. K-Pauls was the place to be—and still is.
3) Plastic Mardi Gras Beads
Back in the day, if you got a "shiny" bead, that was something special. Now that’s all you ever get.
4) K & B
Between here and there…there’s bound to be a K&B.
5) The 1984 Louisiana World’s Fair
Not exactly New Orleans’ shining moment…but of course the mascot was awesome! You can still see many left overs from this event in the city today.
6) Heavy Metal
Eyehategod, Exhorder, and Crowbar all formed in New Orleans in the late 1980s, establishing a vibrant metal scene that is still alive in the city today.
7) Dutch Morial
It just wouldn’t have been the 80s in New Orleans without him—a pioneer in many ways, with plenty of rivalries and scandals along the way—it’s NOLA after all.
8) McKenzie's
At this point, McKenzie’s dominated the bakery game and there was just no better place for a king cake or buttermilk drops. Doesn’t this ad just bring you back??
