Every once in a while, you find a hiking trail that offers views so spectacular that it doesn't even look real. Lake Martin is one of those places. You can drive around the lake, jump in a kayak and explore by boat, or take the 5-mile out-and-back trail to see one of the most scenic spots in Louisiana.
Lake Martin is located just a short drive from Lafayette, over in Breaux Bridge.
Part of the Cypress Island Preserve, Lake Martin is almost 800 acres of natural Louisiana landscape.
There’s a 5.4-mile levee trail that runs along part of the lake that’s perfect for an afternoon stroll.
You can also drive along Rookery Road for spectacular views if you don’t want to set out on foot.
The lake might just be one of the prettiest areas in Louisiana.
You’ll have the chance to see tons of wildlife including birds, alligators, turtles, and all the usual suspects you’d find in the swamp while visiting the area.
The Lake is also home to one of the largest bird rookeries in the state.
Each year beginning in late January, thousands of great egrets, blue herons, cattle egrets, snowy egrets, and spoonbills build their nests here every year.
It's easily one of the most scenic spots in Louisiana.
Stay for the sunsets; they're magical.
