Louisiana is a special place, that’s for sure. Whether you’ve grown up here or moved here years ago and decided to stay, there are plenty of adventures in Louisiana that you should have taken by now, and we’ve listed some of our favorites below. If you haven’t done all 10 yet, start a new year’s Louisiana bucket list and start checking them off your list.
1. Taken a swamp boat tour
Swamp boat tours tend to get the reputation of being a tourist’s attraction, but there’s truly something special about riding through the swamps and bayous, getting up close to some of the most beautiful natural scenery Louisiana has to offer.
2. Held an alligator
It’s just a thing you’re exposed to at some point in your life growing up here.
3. Eaten an alligator
Hopefully not the one you were just holding.
4. Strolled through the French Quarter (during the day)
Taking a leisurely stroll through New Orleans’ oldest neighborhood is one of the most Louisiana things you can do. There’s countless boutiques and shops you can pop in and out of for a bit of shopping.
5. Strolled through the French Quarter (at night)
Bourbon Street at night gets weird, there’s no doubt about it. But everyone should do it at least once.
6. Make your own gumbo from scratch
Using a family recipe, of course. While this may not seem like an "adventure," I assure you, if you've never made a gumbo from scratch... clear your schedule and strap in.
7. Thrown your own crawfish boil
Some people spend years tinkering with their recipes, but just taking the plunge to boil your own is a big step for any Louisianian.
8. Enjoyed a coffee with chicory
Coffee with chicory has been waking Louisianians up for many years, and although it’s a bit of an acquired taste, it’s one every Louisianian should try at least once.
9. Driven across the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge
One of the most scenic drives in the state, the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge clocks in at over 96,000 feet, making it the 3rd longest bridge in the country, and the views are picture-perfect.
10. Watched the sunset over the bayou
Regardless of where you grew up in Louisiana, chances are you grew up near a body of water. From sleepy bayous to man-made lakes, there’s nothing better than ending your day by watching the sunset behind the water while surrounded by our iconic cypress trees.
