Kentucky is home to some record-breaking attractions, from natural wonders like the world's largest underground cave system to man-made marvels like the world's largest pocket knife and world's largest baseball bat (and glove). Many of these record holders admittedly border on the bizarre, as you'll see with today's feature destination. In Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, Vent Haven Museum is the world's only museum dedicated to the art of ventriloquism. It's also home to home to nearly 1,000 dummies (no offense!) once brought to life by ventriloquists. It's a weird and wonderful, only-in-Kentucky museum you simply must experience.
From the outside, Vent Haven Museum looks like a perfectly proper, buttoned-up little museum that could be home to any sort of collection. It's not the kind of place where, say, you'd expect to find thousands of ventriloquist dolls...
...but alas, it is! Vent Haven Museum is the only museum in the entire world dedicated to the art of ventriloquism, and indeed, it's a celebration of these uncanny dolls.
Housing more than 1,000 "dummies" used by ventriloquists from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, Vent Haven's uniqueness draws tourists from literally around the world.
The dolls range from antique to modern, with hand-made creations that are true works of art. Hey there, Penn and Teller!
The museum was founded by ventriloquism enthusiast W.S. Berger, who spent more than 40 years amassing a personal collection of everything related to ventriloquism: dummies, puppets, photos, scripts, memorabilia, playbills, posters, recordings, and more!
In 1973, his extensive collection was officially opened to the public and since then has nearly doubled in size, as its name and reputation have garnered worldwide acclaim.
In fact, to better accommodate the growing collection and provide the best digs for the dolls, Vent Haven Museum has closed for renovations, with a reopening planned for spring 2023.
Ventriloquism is a cornerstone of entertainment history, and only one place in the entire world is dedicated to this unique performance art: Vent Haven Museum in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky!
Did you know Kentucky was home to the world's only ventriloquism museum? Wonders never cease! Vent Haven Museum is currently undergoing renovations and is slated to reopen in early 2023. In the meantime, be sure to follow along on the museum's Facebook page for updates and photos of the collection.
