Kentucky is known for its beautiful horses and the pastures where they roam. The state is filled with fence-lined rolling fields, each one more picturesque than the first. Majestic horses graze and gallop through the bluegrass; it's truly magical. This magic is celebrated at one of Kentucky's premier destinations - The Kentucky Horse Park. Perhaps you've driven by many times and always wondered if it was worth a stop. Well, it's not only worth a visit, but you haven't truly experienced Kentucky until you've seen all The Kentucky Horse Park has to offer.
The Kentucky Horse Park is the perfect day trip destination, located just outside of Lexington. This "Equine Theme Park" has something for everyone, from young children to adults. Their summer season is long, lasting from mid-March into November, allowing plenty of opportunity to plan a visit.
To take in the beautiful park, you can simply walk around and view the statues, horse pastures and stables. But there are also many activities to keep you entertained. Included in admission is a horse-drawn trolley ride that will give you a unique view of the park.
Of course there are options to get up close and personal with the horses. For those 7 years and older, you can take a 35-minute trail ride around the outskirts of the park. For the younger visitors, pony rides are also available. Both of these activities are for an extra fee, but well worth it!
The Kentucky Horse Park aims to bring you into a natural environment, where you can see horses in their element. Whether they're grazing in a field or being bathed in a barn, you can see it all at the park.
During your visit, you'll want to be sure and make time to see the shows. The "Parade of Breeds Show" showcases several different breeds of horses and what they are known for. It's a great opportunity to see these beauties in action.
Another favorite show is the "Hall of Champions." Here you'll get to meet the great race horse and quarter horse champions of the past several years, including "Western Dreamer" pictured below.
For museum fans, the park is also home to The International Museum of the Horse. It's a large space, filled with history and interactive displays for younger horse fans.
When you finish up your day at The Kentucky Horse Park, your only regret will be why you didn't visit sooner. This Kentucky classic draws many visitors, but you may have been unaware of all it offers. It's a great way to celebrate Kentucky's favorite animal, in a pristine, relaxing setting.
