I’ve lived in Kentucky for decades and have yet to travel through all its towns. I’m learning all the time about hidden gems off the beaten path. I especially enjoy trying iconic restaurants in Kentucky. On a recent road trip, I visited the world-famous Sanders Cafe and Museum for the first time in Corbin.
This restaurant was Colonel Sanders's first and where Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) was born.

It opened in 1940 and, since 1990, has functioned as a cafe and museum, serving delicious fried chicken and displaying memorabilia. People come from far and wide to visit Sanders Cafe and Museum; I met a family visiting from Hawaii while I was there!
There are now more than 25,000 KFC franchises in more than 145 countries, including about 4,200 KFCs across the United States.

Incredibly, all of these restaurants have roots in the small town of Corbin, Kentucky.

When I first walked into Sanders Cafe and Museum, it was clear that this was not just another fast-food restaurant.

Signs and displays scattered throughout the restaurant shared interesting facts about its history, traditions, and growth. A maple hutch, table, and chairs from the original 1940s restaurant are displayed.
I enjoyed studying the 1940 model, which depicted the original cafe, hotel, gas station, and more.

A large display showed the 1940s kitchen equipment with an original refrigerator door and a three-handed clock. Colonel Sanders specifically made the three-handed clock to keep track of how long pots of chicken had been frying.
Display cases showed off tons of KFC memorabilia.

There were Crocs with drumstick charms, Star Wars figurines with KFC details, complete sets of the Colonel Sanders Around the World figurines, and KFC wooden shoes. I enjoyed browsing the KFC items, many of which I had no idea were a part of the franchise's history.
I worked up an appetite while learning about the history of KFC. The restaurant serves many tasty chicken dishes, but after some deliberation, I settled on the classic chicken sandwich and fries.

The sandwich was crunchy and hot, and I enjoyed every bite. I loved visiting Sanders Cafe and Museum; it gave me a greater appreciation for Colonel Sanders and KFC. The next time I'm near Corbin, I will definitely return!
