There are many historic destinations in Kentucky that are filled with countless stories and memories. Sometimes these beloved places remain standing and active in the community, but unfortunately, some do not. Many of these restaurants, attractions, general stores, and other locations are often kept alive by the locals who care deeply about their legacy. In the town of Harrodsburg, the historic Mayo Country Store has been brought back to life by Vickie Curtsinger, and everyone that stops in has been truly touched by this nostalgic and heartwarming general store.
Located on the outskirts of Harrodsburg is a historic building that's been a fixture in the area for over a century. In recent years, this classic general store has appeared to be abandoned, run down, and on its way to being demolished, but it now has a new life as Vickie's Mayo Country Store.
For generations, the store has been a place for locals to pick up necessities, as well as gather to socialize. Countless games of cards were played and homemade sandwiches were eaten inside the store and on its well-loved porch.
As of summer 2018, Vickie Curtsinger has reopened the Mayo Country Store and has lovingly restored it to its former glory. If you visited the store when it was open previously, you'll definitely notice the similarities. The old wooden floors, tongue-and-groove walls, and the cabinetry feel perfectly worn and passionately restored.
The country store is now buzzing again with visitors, shoppers, and those looking for a good meal or a sweet treat. Friends gather at the antique tables for a board game and folks browse the unique items that fill the shelves.
As a general store, one feature of this destination is the simple, yet scrumptious menu that is served during their business hours. Don't miss out on trying something during your visit!
The store is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m, Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A classic sandwich and a cold drink is the meal of choice and will transport you right back in time. You can also pick up meats and cheeses to take home to make your own.
The store is filled with local items ranging from food to home decor to gifts. Vickie has brought back many favorites and you can even purchase cold milk in bottles, which is delivered fresh every Friday.
A new feature of the store is that it is also a boutique. Shop for modern fashions and accessories and find one-of-a-kind items to add to your wardrobe.
So many memories were made at Mayo Country Store, and now those traditions can continue on. If you're local to the area or are passing nearby, stop by for a game of Rook at a refurbished table and step back in time at this incredible general store in Kentucky.
Vickie's Mayo Country Store is now poised to be home to many more memories for generations to come. Do you have memories of visiting this historic general store? What other local destinations do you love that have been kept alive or brought back to life? Let us know in the comments!
