Lake Malone State Park is easily one of the most enchanting state parks in Kentucky. In addition to being objectively beautiful, it’s home to a family of woodland giants, aptly named the Big Twigs. In 2021, the Big Twigs Family of larger-than-life characters — Happy, Bobber, and Oakley — set up camp at Lake Malone, and the trio has since become a beloved feature of the park. Recently, the Big Twigs welcomed three new family members, making this already-charming Kentucky park even more enchanting! Come with me to meet this whimsical family living in the woods of Kentucky.
From the entrance, Lake Malone looks like your typical Kentucky State Park: lush and lovely, with signage directing visitors to the various recreation destinations: beaches, docks, camping, and hiking.
What the signs at this Kentucky State Park *don't* say, however, is that there is a family of giants within its wondrous woodlands.

These three, larger-than-life forest giants range from 14- to 17-feet tall, and were designed to make the park more welcoming for guests. Each family member models an activity that can be done at the park, such as hiking and roasting s'mores. This was one big happy family, but something was missing... or rather someone.
Three someones, to be exact.
In fall 2022, the Big Twigs welcomed three new members to the family: butterfly-chasing Annette Malone, book-lover Paige Malone, and curious nature-lover Wattson Malone.
Why are the Big Twigs at Lake Malone? Well, similar to some of our country's most iconic roadside attractions, the Big Twig Family came to Lake Malone State Park to attract attention. To make a statement. To provide another reason to visit this enchanting Kentucky State Park.
While some people might still ask, "Why?" We simply reply, "Why not?" Why not have a family of larger-than-life woodland creatures at a Kentucky State Park? Because here in Kentucky, all are welcome. Even a growing family of Big Twigs.
Welcome to the Bluegrass, Annette, Paige, and Wattson!
