When growing up in Kentucky, it should pretty much be a rite of passage to have a few good hikes under your belt before reaching adulthood. Hopefully, every child realizes what a beautiful state we live in, but if you've been looking for an opportunity to show your own children that natural beauty, then head to McCreary County and Whitley City. There you'll find a stretch of the Sheltowee Trace Trail that leads to Princess Falls, and your kids will love this fairly easy, 2-mile waterfall hike in Kentucky. It's easy to see why some people call this the best waterfall hiking trail in Kentucky.
Located in McCreary County near Whitley City is a stretch of the Sheltowee Trace Trail that leads to Princess Falls. This is a popular route that's about 2 miles out and back to get to the falls and then return back to the trailhead.
There is a lower and upper parking area and if possible, you'll want to seek out the upper section. By starting here, you'll avoid some of the thick mud that can accumulate on the trail. Although if you take little ones, this may be their favorite part.
The trail takes you along Lick Creek and also parallels the Cumberland River. It's incredibly scenic with many little waterfalls and interesting rock formations along the way.
There is very little elevation change on the trail, making it ideal for young hikers. There is a bridge, as well as plenty of opportunities for exploring the creek and woods.
And then you come to Princess Falls, which can be viewed from a few different angles. Stand in front on the sand for this perspective, or you can carefully view it from above.
The flow of the water depends on recent weather patterns, but if you go after a rainfall, the mud is worth it for this crashing view.
Even if the flow is slower, Princess Falls is still a beautiful place to experience as a family. To keep it that way, be sure to take any garbage back out with you and consider picking up any trash you see along the way.
As with any hiking trail in Kentucky, be on the lookout for wildlife such as bears and snakes, and head out excited and prepared. Many families have enjoyed this waterfall hike in Kentucky and it's a great spot to introduce your own children to the natural beauty of our state.
