One of my favorite ways to celebrate the return of summer in the Bluegrass State is with a visit to the local ice cream shop, Dairy Kastle. This hidden gem is on the corner of Eastern Parkway and Bradley Avenue and has been serving sweet treats and savory food for more than 40 years. On a sunny evening in May, a friend and I visited Dairy Kastle in Louisville, Kentucky, for their mouthwatering desserts.

On warm nights -- the kind perfect for ice cream -- the line often wraps around the area in front of the local ice cream shop. Don’t let it scare you away, though. The line moves quickly, and the customers are often friendly. You’ll likely get to know the people around you in line.

There are a few specialty ice creams, like the Fat Elvis, a shake made with peanut butter, bananas, and vanilla ice cream. There are also plenty of standard menu items, including shakes, sundaes, banana splits, flurries, and soft serve in a cup or cone.
In addition to desserts, Dairy Kastle serves casual meals.

Customers can order chili dogs, hot dogs, tacos-in-a-bag, and barbeque sandwiches. They also sell soft drinks and bottled water.

I ordered a small peanut butter cup flurry, and my friend ordered a soft serve vanilla cone with sprinkles. We waited a few minutes while the attendant whipped them up. The ice creams were large: a small flurry is 16 ounces!

Dairy Kastle does not have an indoor seating area. We enjoyed sitting at a picnic table and chatting while we ate our treats.

The soft serve in my flurry was light and smooth, and the peanut butter cups added a rich flavor and texture. It was the perfect ending to a warm day.
