Kentucky's most popular attractions are great for bringing visitors to our state but they are also wonderful assets to locals to get out and experience our state. Even if you live in Kentucky and always have, don't discount these destinations that have a lot to offer and even include a few surprises. The Kentucky Horse Park is a place everyone knows and many have visited, but perhaps you haven't been there in awhile or don't know a lot about it. You may not know that this horse park in Kentucky is home to one of the largest wooden structures in North America, which is aptly called the Big Barn. This iconic horse barn is enormous and you really need to see it in person to get a true sense of its size.
Kentucky Horse Park is a beautiful destination in Lexington that is the heart of our state's horse country.
Horses are celebrated here in a way only Kentucky could do and it's a place everyone should visit at least once. When you visit, you'll learn all sorts of interesting facts and one of them is about the Big Barn, shown above.
The Big Barn is one of the largest wooden structures in North America and you don't get a sense of how big it really is until you step inside.
It seems to go on forever and the sight is quite impressive. Not only does it house horses, but it also acts as a place for carriages, demonstrations, grooming, and more.
The Big Barn is appropriately home to the biggest horses at the park.
Draft horses are very comfortable here and have plenty of room to relax. You can walk through the barn and visit with these gentle giants that stand several feet higher than the average person.
You'll learn all about the Big Barn and other facts about the park on the trolley ride that's offered daily April 1st through November 3rd.
Hop on at the Trolley Station and enjoy an 8-10 minute tour around the park. Be sure to also stop by the Big Barn again for a Draft Horse Demonstration. A schedule of events for the park can be found here.
After you've visited the biggest horses at the park, stop by and say hello to the fastest.
The Hall of Champions is a lovely barn that makes for a comfortable home for many award-winning race horses. You can walk through and see these beautiful animals and congratulate them on a successful career.
And then be sure to stick around for the Hall of Champions Show.
The staff will bring out a few retired race horses so you can get a better look and learn about all they've accomplished. Another can't miss show is the Parade of Breeds where you'll learn about the variety of horses that call this place home.
The Kentucky Horse Park is a favorite attraction in our state for so many reasons.
You likely already knew that it was home to our state's favorite animal, but now you know that this park in Kentucky is filled with enormous structures, natural beauty, and plenty of history.
