Winter in Kansas can get quite cold. We may not have quite as much snow as some other areas of the country, but there are plenty of snowy areas to check out if you're looking for a winter getaway in Kansas! One of the snowiest parts of the state that's perfect for a winter day trip in Kansas is the area around Rawlins County up in the northwest area, near Colorado. This is one of the coldest parts of the state, and it's especially magnificent in the wintertime. It's one of the best parts of Kansas in winter. This is the quintessentially rural, prairie-filled part of the Sunflower State that's so magical when it's snowy out! Who doesn't want to visit a place that feels like a winter wonderland when it's cold and feels like the charming small town it is the rest of the year? It's a great place to go any time of year.
If you want to get technical, the city weather station that averaged the most snow in Kansas between 1985-2015 is McDonald.
McDonald is a rural town with a population of just over 100. It's home to the McDonald Grocery. This is a great old-fashioned grocery store with a deli that's one of the few places to eat out in this small town.
Rawlins County's entire population is only about 2,500.
This place is pretty rural and is the type of town many out-of-state visitors might imagine when they think of Kansas.
However, there are plenty of things to do in this charming area, no matter when you visit. Big Ed's Steakhouse in Bird City serves up delicious steaks in a friendly small-town joint.
If you need somewhere to stay, check out the It'll Do Motel in Atwood.
This area may lack big-city amenities, but it's such a wonderful county with a strong sense of community that's common to Sunflower State small towns.
McDonald's annual snowfall between 1985 and 2015 was 37.6 inches, considerably higher than the state average of about 19 inches. Winter in Kansas is certainly more snowy here!
Not to mention, it's absolutely beautiful in the wintertime! Visiting here is one of the most fun things to do in Kansas in winter.
