Kansans and the outdoors go together hand in hand, though we sometimes miss a spot from time to time. This gorgeous wildlife area is one of many places in Kansas we think need more love. Have you visited this beautiful section of our state? We can't get enough!
Welcome to a gorgeous area of Kansas that's often overlooked, Marais des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge.
This beautiful river area encompasses over 5,000 acres of hardwood forest, wetlands, and grassland.
The forested areas are particularly interesting to hike through, with plenty of bird species and deer around every corner.
After all, it's not every day Kansas has a forest to hike through.
The wetlands area is full of waterfowl and other shorebirds during much of the year, making for great photos and birdwatching.
Trying to see how many different species you can spot is always a great competition!
Wildflowers in many colors call this area their home, whether that's near the river as you fish for catfish or walk the trails. They've got a little bit of everything!
All manner of cool wildlife you might not have near your home live here, and whether you're looking to spot newts or harvest a few mushrooms, you're in the right area.
Make sure to never leave behind anything when you visit, don't stack any rocks around the river, and enjoy your visit!
For more information about the Wildlife Area, check out the KDWPT website. If you plan on hunting, know that you must check in and check out regardless of what species you're pursuing.
