When the sun is shining in the Sunflower State, there is no reason for you to stay indoors. Rather, you want to head outdoors to one of the many incredible attractions in Kansas. Lake Shawnee, located on the outskirts of Topeka, is a beautiful man-made lake in Kansas that is certainly worth the trip.
The creation of Lake Shawnee was no simple endeavor.
Construction on Lake Shawnee first began in 1935. The lake was a Work Progress Administration project. These projects were designed to build up the infrastructure in the United States. They also provided employment to individuals who were struggling following the Great Depression. After four years, Lake Shawnee was completed in September of 1939 and more than 5,000 fishermen were present on opening day.
Today, this man-made lake in Kansas attracts thousands of individuals each year. It is the perfect destination for boating, swimming, fishing, sailing, and camping.
When you come to Lake Shawnee in Kansas, you’ll want to spend some time on the water. Grab a canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard and jump in.
Adventure Cove is a floating playground and is one area of the lake that every member of the family will love.
At Adventure Cove, there is a beach area, paddle boats to rent, sand volleyball courts, and more. It is the perfect way to enjoy the sunshine and receive a little fresh air.
There is a 1,100-acre park surrounding Lake Shawnee with all of the amenities you need for the perfect day trip or weekend getaway.
Make sure to visit the Ted Ensley Gardens. This 37.5-acre garden is located on the west side of Lake Shawnee.
You’ll want to spend all day exploring the beautiful gardens. You’ll find more than 1,500 varieties of flowers in this area.
Spend a little time relaxing in the gazebo, under the pergola, or in the Meditation Garden. There are paved trails around the garden, making this beautiful area accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. The Ted Ensley Garden is also the perfect place for an afternoon picnic.

The Lake Shawnee Campground is located on the east side of the lake. There are 123 campsites with sites for both tents and RVs. At the campground, you’ll also find many additional amenities for campers including a natural swimming area, playground, and showers.
While there are many activities to enjoy at Lake Shawnee, make sure you give yourself plenty of time to relax. Sit back and watch the wildlife in the quieter areas of the lake.
