If you're in Kansas and looking for an outdoor activity that's good for people of all different hiking levels, head to Chisholm Creek. This hike is in Chisholm Creek Park and is about a 15-minute car ride from Wichita.
The path throughout this flat 1.7-mile loop is full of many scenic surprises including a river, interesting shaped trees, wildlife, vantage points to birdwatch, and wildflowers. And, although the trail is open year-round, April through September are the best times to enjoy this relaxing hike.
Since Chisholm Creek is conveniently located off of Interstates 235 and 35, you can easily make a stop at the trail for most of the day or as part of a bigger outing.

This place is amazingly beautiful, and its landscapes are impressively diverse - but it's such a well-kept secret that even plenty of born-and-bred locals don't realize it's true. Folks who appreciate a nice, quiet hike without many distractions or other hikers on the trail will love hiking almost anywhere in Kansas; the Sunflower State reflects its low-key nature in its... well, low-key nature. Check out these five wonderful hiking trails in Kansas, all of which are perfect for folks who prefer to avoid the masses:
Hidden near Plymouth, Kansas, is a little ditty known as the Rocktown Trail. This two-and-a-half-mile adventure is quite easy, and it's suitable for most folks. Wander through steep slopes, rolling hills, and unbeatable views of Wilson Lake. This trail is an amazing example of just how much fun Kansas can be; there are all sorts of hidden gems. The stars of the show here are by far the 15 to 30-foot-tall red sandstone formations, which any Kansan can probably identify with their eyes closed. In 2011, this trail made the list of USA Today's 51 Great Hikes in the USA, and it's easy to see why.
The Prairie Center Nature Reserve Loop is a great example of everything that's right with Kansas: vast, endless skies, a stunning pristine pond, rolling hills and prairies, and more. This hike is easy, and like the one before this, it's just 2.5 miles long. Trail pathways are well-kept and often mowed; do plan accordingly, though, for dogs are not allowed on this one. This hike is open all year, and I definitely recommend showing up for all four seasons. Each is special for its own reasons, from incredible wildflowers galore to all the peace and quiet of one of the cutest ponds in Kansas.
Speaking of wildflowers, the 1.7-mile Baker Wetlands Trail is a sunflower lover's dream come true. In the late summer, the entire area comes ablaze with flowery colors, and the views of Baker Wetlands make the whole trek worth it, as well. Outside of sunflowers, there's a healthy range of other naturally-occurring delights; it's worth noting, though, that there is very little shade on this trail, so I strongly recommend coming out to do it during a time when the temperatures (and bugs!) won't be so trying. If you didn't know we had wetlands in Kansas, well, now you do - and you should check 'em out!
One of the first things I think of when I think about Kansas is probably windmills, and for good reason - they're almost an unofficial symbol of our beautiful little state. Enter the Windmill Pasture Scenic Overlook Trail, an adventure and a half at the legendary Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. This hike is almost six miles in length, and it's worth every step along the way for the awe-inspiring views. It's not at all uncommon to spot wild bison and lots of other critters, so keep your eyes open (and be as safe as possible.) The trail is gravel and well-maintained, so most folks should be able to do it easy-peasy.
Ask any Kansan where they think the weirdest place in the state is, and many of them will probably mention the Monument Rocks Chalk Pyramids. And weird they are - but oh-so-interesting, if you ask me. The shortest hike on this list at just under one mile, this hike will introduce you to the high strangeness of Kansas's incredible countryside. Where most folks assume are nothing but prairies and flatlands is actually an incredible example of the diversity of this landscape, and few hikes do a better job of driving that point home. Do keep in mind that this trail is on privately-owned land, so be respectful and leave no trace. Stay on designated trails and pathways - Kansas is for everyone, so let's keep it that way.
