Iowa has more than one town (we’re looking at you, Elk Horn and Pella) that, in their early days, chose to buck the melting pot mentality and instead set up an impressively authentic mimic of their homeland. To this day, the architecture and festivals of these regions draw visitors who are intrigued by their respective glimpses of preserved ethnic culture. And then there are the Amana Colonies.
While the Amana Colonies in eastern central Iowa have profound German and Swiss influence in language and architecture, the history here is even more unique than just its European heritage. In fact, it’s so remarkable that this town is preserved as a national historic landmark.
Settlers of these seven small villages left Germany because of the persecution and hardship they experienced there. What you will find preserved still today at Amana is ethnic German and Swiss culture shaped deeply by the unique religion of the community.
A group known as the Inspirationalists moved to America and eventually purchased large tracts of land in Iowa and established these communities in 1859. A communal lifestyle was adopted here and lasted nearly 80 years.
The plain, Germanic-style buildings you will still find here had fascinating uses. Local stones were used heavily in the construction, giving the buildings a unique color.
There is so much to see in these colonies, and a good place to start is at the Amana Heritage Museum. The Colonies are famous for their food, wines, and beer. There are a range of festivals, one for each season such as Winterfest and Wurstfest, perfect opportunities to experience the Colonies’ fun activities, food, and history.
Art, once discouraged by the religious leaders, is now thriving and so are unique shops offering wares from crafts such as quilts and chair making to jewelry and soaps. It’s definitely not like shopping at a big box store! Everything is so unique and well-crafted.
Tours are available along with outdoor recreational opportunities such as hiking and biking.
The Amana Colonies website has helpful maps and information on events. Unique and charming all at the same time, this historic landmark is worth a visit for an engaging day away in Iowa!
