You never know what you'll find if you spend some time driving around Iowa's countryside. One little winding road in Jones County has become a quirky little spot that visitors and artists love to see up close. The Hula Hoop Tree is truly like no other place in the Midwest.
Disclaimer: Since publication, the Hula Hoop Tree has sadly been taken down. Continue reading through to get a feel for how special and fun this tree was for the state.
In 2015, a storm blew through the community of Amber, and two hula hoops appeared on a roadside tree when the storm had passed.
Nobody is sure how the hula hoops got on the tree, but with a few gusts of wind, a tradition was born.
Today, "Her Majesty" the Hula Hoop Tree is one of Eastern Iowa's most beloved landmarks!
Families come around here to toss their own hoops up onto the tree and see this unique display for themselves.
The Hula Hoop Tree is constantly changing, as wind and weather blow down hoops, or as more people add their own touch to the tree.
Hula hoops are added, hula hoops fall down, and the tree is a constantly changing work of art.
At the base of the tree, you'll find "Root Rocks," as well as downed hoops ready for another turn on the tree.
Take a hula hoop and give it your best shot - if it lands on a branch, it gets to stay!
These Root Rocks are painted by a local artist, who leaves them at the base of the tree as souvenirs for visitors to take home.
These gorgeous rocks are painted with an image of Her Majesty herself!
When you visit the tree, be respectful of the cows that live on the land next to it. Don't feed them any snacks and be sure you leave no trace of your visit - beyond an additional hoop!
The Hula Hoop Tree is located in the little town of Amber, between Anamosa and Monticello. You'll find it on County Home Road, about 3.5 miles east of US-151.
