Trust us, we’re not full of hot air on this – the Iowa hot air balloon festival is simply amazing and something you have to see for yourself. From July 26 to August 3, make plans to witness this colorful, high-flying classic balloon show. Here’s what you need to know and what you’ll see at the Indianola hot air balloon festival this year.
Indianola is ground-zero for hot air ballooning. The city is about 10 miles south of Des Moines and it's home to the National Balloon Museum and U.S. Ballooning Hall of Fame.
The National Balloon Classic has been taking place since 1989. The 9-day event is held at Memorial Balloon Field and it draws nearly 100 hot air balloons.
Every year the event is a party - it features live music nightly, food and beverage vendors, activities for kids, fireworks and skydiver performances.
The balloons are spectacular, especially at night. The balloons don't fly during the heat of the day. They take to the air in a morning session and in an evening session. Morning flights launch at 6:00 a.m. and evening flights launch at 6:00 p.m., weather permitting.
The balloons are at center stage and pilots from all over the country bring their balloons to the event. They compete in "races" that involve flying accuracy.
It's possible to book a ride during the event so you can discover the magic of balloon flight. It's an experience like no other. If you decide to stay on the ground, bring a lawn chair or blanket
, relax and enjoy the show.
