For nature lovers, state parks are the perfect place to spend the day or even a weekend. Luckily, Iowa is home to over 80 state parks, each one more beautiful than the next. With so many state parks, it can be tricky to narrow down which ones are worth a visit (all of them), but there's one underrated state park that's just overflowing with natural beauty, and it's worth a road trip from any corner of the state.
Black Hawk State Park may not be the biggest state park in Iowa, but it sure is one of the prettiest.
Tucked away in the town of Lake View, the park clocks in at just over 80 acres, and every one of them is filled with something beautiful or historic.
The park’s main claim to fame is the lake the park is nestled around.
It’s home to the southernmost glacial lake in the United States, and one of the few natural lakes in the state.
The 957-acre lake is a popular summertime attraction for those looking to cool off in those hot summer days.
Catfish, crappies, bluegills, and largemouth bass are just a few of the bites you could find at the end of your line.
If fishing’s not your thing, no worries.
You can always go waterskiing, tubing, or just float around the lake.
There are a few different trails that are perfect for an afternoon hike.
The Stubb Severson Nature Trail is just about 1.5 miles long and you’ll have the opportunity to see tons of wildlife including deer, songbirds, and waterfowl.
For the more adventurous, you can always take on the 33-mile Sauk Rail Trail.
This paved trail starts near the park and ends at Swan Lake State Park over in Carroll Country. Perfect for a bike ride!
After a long day of fishing, boating, and hiking, pull up some grass and enjoy the rest of your afternoon with a good book.
There's ample green space to sprawl out on, so pack a picnic and enjoy the day!
