In the Hoosier state, the start of snow doesn’t put the natural world to sleep. All around Indiana, there’s wintry wildlife to wow you. You just have be patient, know where to look, and be willing to brave a little bit of cold. Here are five enchanting ecological destinations for when you want to spend your winter taking a walk on the wild side.
1. Indianapolis Zoo
The Indianapolis Zoo has a number of holiday highlights, not least its well-loved lights display and Christmas village. If you ask us, though, the best seasonal sights are furry friends who feel right at home in the snow
It might not technically be "Rudolf the Red Panda," but what are the holidays without a little imagination?
It’s okay if you can't stand the chill quite as well. These are big shoes to fill. The Indianapolis Zoo is located at 1200 W Washington St, Indianapolis, IN 46222.
2. Porter County Parks / Sunset Hill Farm County Park (Valparaiso)
If you're looking for a more local winter wildlife experience, Porter County parks are open all season. Take a hike among the deer, birds, and other creatures that call the Hoosier State their winter home. Sunset Hill Farm County Park is located at 775 Meridian Rd #8507, Valparaiso, IN 46385.
No holiday in Porter Park is complete without a stop at Sunset Hill Farm County Park. Their annual lights display is cancelled in 2020, but guests can meet the animals of Sunset Farm throughout the winter. Sunset Hill Farm County Park is located at 775 Meridian Rd #8507, Valparaiso, IN 46385.
3. Audubon Bird Count
Each year, thousands of people gather for the Audubon Society's "Winter Bird Count," braving the frigid Indiana temperatures to help document the state's avian life. It may sound like something meant only for committed birders, but there's plenty of beauty to behold if you're bold. Plus, you can participate from your own backyard.
4. Wolf Park (Battle Ground)
Another wild winter destination that gives back to nature is Wolf Park. Located in Battle Ground, Wolf Park gives guests the chance to encounter wolves in majestic snowy settings.
There are a number of seasonal events hosted at Wolf Park, and some non-seasonal ones that are worth a trip as well. For instance, the park hosts an event where you feed wolves watermelon. Need we say more? Wolf Park is located at 4004 E 800 N, Battle Ground, IN 47920.
5. Sambol's Tree Farm (Fortville)
Trees may not seem as "wild" as wolves, but, for some people, Christmas trees are the staple that holds the holidays together. Not only is cutting your own tree a tradition, real Christmas trees are a greener option than artificial trees. Sambol's Tree Farm is a great example of an Indiana Christmas tree farm where you can wander among the conifers, choose your own tree, and support a business that gives back to both the environment and the community. Sambol's Tree Farm is located at 7783 IN-9, Fortville, IN 46040.
