We all get bummed out sometimes. If you're anything like us, when you feel down and out, you get the urge to go away - anywhere but here - to any place you can find that might be worth your while. You crave places where folks are friendly and warm, and the surroundings are scenic and pleasant. Well, as it turns out, if you just so happen to search for "the best town in Indiana," "the friendliest town in Indiana," or something of the sort, there's one town that comes up again and again. It's the lovely little town north of Indy called Carmel, and it's won awards for its magnificence and optimism. It's the perfect place to run off to when you crave the anywhere but here sort of thing; you might even love it so much you decide to live here.
Some folks might argue that Carmel is a city, but with a population of under 100,000 people, we think it qualifies as a large town (but not quite a "city" just yet).
It was originally called Bethlehem, and in 1837, it was formally platted and recorded. Today, you can find the spot where Bethlehem was - it's where the clock tower is now. You can't miss it; it's on Rangeline Road and Main.
It was renamed Carmel in 1874 when the Post Office was officially built.
Ever since, it's been an active hub of activity, arts, entertainment, and friendly faces. Everything in Carmel just feels a little sweeter.

As one might expect in a larger town, there are plenty of things to do around here. No matter what you're passionate about, you'll find something in Carmel that reflects those interests. There are all sorts of festivals and events held by the town multiple times per year, and community is a thing they value greatly. You'll find the residents of Carmel coming together to celebrate just about everything every chance they get - and you'll be welcomed as well.
Among the most popular activities around Carmel are the Carmel Arts & Design District, where you can find numerous galleries, shops, and cultural spots, and Midtown Plaza, which boasts all sorts of fun things to check out (with, you guessed it, plenty more shops).
Carmel really is one of those "shop till you drop"-friendly towns. There are plenty of wonderful local mom-and-pop eateries, delis, and even bakeshops, too. Got a sweet tooth, for example? We strongly suggest you check out The Cake Bake Shop, which is as beautiful as its confections are delicious.
