Exploring historical sites in Indiana is a fun and exciting way to learn about our state's past. From visiting memorials and museums to walking around some of the area's oldest streets and parks, you can learn so much about the Hoosier state by visiting in person. If you're looking for a town to explore that's both packed with history and full of charm, then you have to visit the oldest town in Indiana.
If you didn't know, the oldest town in our fair state is beautiful Vincennes, Indiana. Vincennes was founded in 1732 by the French, and later became an American city after the tumultuous Battle of Vincennes. In fact, Vincennes was actually dubbed the capital of the Indiana Territory until 1813, when the capital was then moved temporarily to Corydon. This important city was a thriving marketplace during Indiana's early years and remains a historic landmark for all Hoosiers to enjoy.
One of the most famous landmarks within Vincennes is the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park Rotunda. This park and monument is dedicated to the valiant efforts Colonel George Rogers Clark demonstrated when developing the clever plan that ultimately led American troops to capture Fort Sackville in Vincennes from the French. These heroic efforts succeeded and the fort was won by Clark, without losing a single soldier during the battle. Visitors can explore this memorial and gorgeous park in historic tribute to this American soldier.
Explore the stunning and historic architecture of Vincennes by walking around the downtown areas, where you'll find gorgeous buildings and small shops to peek inside.
A trip to the incredible Grouseland William Henry Harrison museum is also an absolute must. This museum houses incredible paintings, architecture, and historical artifacts.
You'll also want to check out some of the more unique businesses, such as Castle Car Wash, which has one of the most delightful signs in all of Indiana.
You'll also find mouth watering sandwiches, cuisine, and desserts at Pea-Fections, a Vincennes staple. If you're after amazing pizza, Bill Bobe's Pizzaria is an amazing option that always satisfies.
With charm, history, amazing architecture, fantastic food, and even cabins you can rent through the Knox County Parks and Recreation department, Vincennes has everything you'd want in a small town.
