Lovers of all things holistic and natural, are you ready for this? Hidden in Indianapolis is a little respite from the real world that's not only relaxing; it's also thought to be quite beneficial for one's health, and it is said to be able to treat numerous conditions. It's an art known as halotherapy - or, therapy using salt. Now, we know that sounds a little strange, but bear with us! The Indianapolis Salt Cave is a salt cave in Indiana (surprise) that draws visitors from all over the state. Come experience the truly, deeply relaxing nature of halotherapy at the Indy Salt Cave; it's one of the coolest little hidden gems in Indiana, and we suspect you'll love it as much as we do.
From the outside, it's a simple brick-and-mortar building with a small sign and plenty of room for parking.
Don't let the exterior fool you - inside is a world of relaxation like none other.
As soon as you walk in, you'll be surrounded by a feeling of peace and well-being.
The kind, knowledgeable staff will be happy to help you fill out intake paperwork (if it's your first visit), and will provide you with a brief overview of halotherapy, what it is, and how it works.
The short of it is this: within the sanctuary (that's actually a man-made recreation of the salt mines in Poland), medical-grade salts are aerosolized and released into the air.
The particles are itty-bitty and very easy to inhale. This small size ensures that the salts can reach even the deepest parts of your lungs (without accumulating in there, of course, or causing adverse side effects). In fact, there are no known negative side effects to halotherapy at all. Score!
The salt room is cool and humid, making it perfect for absorbing the aerosolized salts.
So, what are the health benefits then? Halotherapy is said to help with conditions including asthma, allergies, bronchial infections, pneumonia, COPD, and cystic fibrosis, among other things. Of course, this is absolutely not to replace treatment with your medical doctor.
Nope, this is simply meant as a side-therapy next to your primary care that you might feel the result of right away, or after a little while.
Don't have any conditions? No worries - there's plenty of room for you here, too! This salt cave in Indiana is truly, deeply relaxing, and some guests find it to be an ideal spot for some meditation and reflection (or just overall quieting of the soul).
Arrive with warm, comfy clothes (the temperature inside the room is a constant 60-65 degrees) and maybe even a blanket, and prepare to lose yourself in relaxation.
Salt cave sessions are $20 for kids nine to 17, and $40 for adults. Children up to age eight are free with a paying adult.
The salt cave isn't the only therapy available! You'll also want to check out the infrared sauna and/or the hand and foot detox.
