Few state parks in Indiana are quite as much a treasure as Pokagon State Park is. As the fifth-ever state park in the Hoosier State, it's nothing short of sheer natural perfection, and once you arrive for the first time you're sure to never want to leave. There's a solution to this (well, sort of): camping. Pokagon State Park is one of the best state parks we have, and better still, it's home to some of the best campgrounds in Indiana. Sure, you can only camp here for 14 consecutive nights at a time - but we promise those 14 days will be absolutely glorious.
Pokagon State Park was originally proposed in 1925, and today, it encompasses 1,260 acres of Indiana's most beautiful landscapes.
There are so many things to do and experience jam-packed into this little park that you'll have no choice BUT to stay a few days, if you want to do it all.
The park is centered around two gorgeous natural lakes: Snow Lake, and Lake James.
The water is crystal-clear, chilly, and wonderful during the warmest months of the year. There is much fun to be had: swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, tubing... the possibilities are pretty much only as limited as your aquatic imagination.
Not a fan of watersports? That's fine - there's plenty more to do while you're here.
You can choose to camp out and stay the night in any of the 193 electric campsites, 72 non-electric campsites, multiple dispersed camping locations, or even some on-site cabins! Be sure to make reservations well ahead of time, though, as Pokagon State Park is quite popular (and it's pretty obvious as to why once you've been here).
In the winter, there's a super-epic toboggan run at Pokagon State Park, and in the summer, the park comes to life in every other way possible.
Spring and autumn, too, bring their own rewards. No matter what time of year it is, it's ALWAYS a rewarding time to show up at Pokagon State Park, especially if you intend to camp there.
Even if you're not big on camping, no worries - the nearby Potawatomi Inn is an amazing place to stay with all the modern amenities you know and love.
Pokagon State Park is an experience for everyone, no matter how outdoorsy they may be. No matter what your passions and interests are, you're sure to find a way to indulge them at one of the best state parks in Indiana.
Oh, and by the way: nothing beats watching the sunset over one of the two lakes at Pokagon.
Come for the camping, but stay for the natural wonders packed into every nook and cranny.
Be sure to visit the official Indiana DNR page about Pokagon State Park to reserve your camping spot ASAP, as they fill up fast. There, you'll also find all kinds of other information about the park and what to expect on your adventures.
