One of Indiana's most haunted bridges is also one of the most beautiful. Located in Washington Township Park in the town of Avon, the Avon Bridge has been the site of haunted and chilling tales since its construction in 1906.
Built in 1906, this hauntingly gorgeous triple arch railroad bridge was designed by W.M. Dunne. In 1908, the bridge was double tracked.
Avon Bridge is 300 feet long and stands 70 feet high.
A few haunted tales surround the building of the bridge.
One story is about a drunk railroad worker who accidentally fell and was buried alive in the wet concrete. Whenever a train rumbles overhead, people claim they can still hear his moans.
The second is about four workers who fell to their deaths during the construction of the bridge into White Lick Creek. There have been unexplained sounds of loud thuds and splashes, even when the creek is its calmest.
The most well-known tale is about a woman walking carrying her sick baby in her arms across the bridge one night when she accidentally fell off the bridge. To this day, legend says you can hear a mother's mournful cries and screams as she searches for her baby.
When you hear those screams and cries, the only way to stop them is to drive your car under the bridge and honk your horn. Perhaps the shock of such a sound is enough to silence any ghost.
Avon Bridge is only one part of Washington Township Park's White Lick Creek Trail. This 1.5-mile trail is a beautiful nature hike that is part of cooperative effort by the three local townships of Avon, Brownsburg, and Plainsfield.
