One of Indiana's favorite pastimes is killing entire afternoons at any one of our amazing lakes. Indiana just so happens to be home to more than 80 lakes, each of which is fascinating, beautiful, or downright awe-inspiring in its own way. Thanks to low pollution and natural beauty, many of those lakes are quite clear, as they don't seem to get as cloudy, mucky, or dark as some lakes can (and do). One such clear lake in Indiana is beautiful Brookville Lake, located in Liberty; take a look and see why it might just be the perfect Hoosier State vacation spot:
This stunning, clear lake is surrounded by 400 campsites and is home to more than 20 miles of wonderful hiking and walking trails.
On still days, the water's surface almost looks like glass. Unfortunately, given the kind of paradise this place is, it's rarely ever still.
However, should you be lucky enough to enjoy Brookville Lake with little to no other folks around, you're sure to remember its perfect, quiet comfort for a long time.
You'll find yourself drawn back time and time again; for the best chances of peace and quiet, you'll want to plan a visit during the week (and probably early in the morning). Trust us when we say it's certainly worth the effort.
The lake is surrounded by fascinating grounds; there are old Native American burial mounds in the area, and scattered all over the region are plentiful fossils thought to be at least 450 million years old.
The clear water is quite helpful when it comes to hunting for treasures like fossils, minerals, and other things. On the other hand, it's not terribly ideal for fishing - but the fishing here is good, regardless.
The fish that call the lake home tend to grow to be quite large. Interestingly, the walleye here play a special role in the ecosystems around Indiana, as their eggs are used for "planting" walleye into other lakes all over the state.
Once you've had your fill of the water (impossible!), you might want to take some time to explore some of the other 11,000 acres of designated rec areas nearby. They include Mounds State Recreation Area and Quakertown State Recreation Area.
Common activities enjoyed at or near the lake include delightful things like fishing and ice fishing, horseshoe pits, marinas, a playground, and so much more.
As mentioned before, the campsites are plentiful. There are 62 full hookup sites, 388 sites with electricity, and even a camp store!
It's important to note, however, that blue-green algae is present in the lake year-round, and swimming in, drinking, or cooking with water from the lake is strongly discouraged (and an all-around terrible idea).
