Tori Jane is a storm chaser, writer, photographer, and the village idiot - in that order. When she's not out and about dancing with the meanest storms on planet Earth for funsies she can be found wandering, shooting landscapes, writing, editing photos, and otherwise up to no good. Legend has it that she can also be occasionally spotted typing up short bios in the third person, but those rumors are unsubstantiated.
Think fast: if anyone ever asked you to name the creepiest-sounding trail in Indiana, what would you tell them? The reason I ask is because I found this amazing hike near/around the beautiful Salamonie Lake that’s pretty amazing despite its own name; known as the Bloodroot Trail, this lengthy, moderately challenging hike is a breath of fresh air for anyone who needs one. At just under 12 miles long, it’s an adventure and a half – but definitely one worth having. Come on out to the Salamonie River State Forest and check out this epic outdoor adventure… if you dare!
Welcome to the Salamonie Lake Bloodroot Trail, an awe-inspiring hike with incredible lake views, beautiful foliage, and so much more.
The hike begins at the Lost Bridge West State Recreation Area at the Interpretive Center and then meanders in a 13-mile loop, returning you back to the head of the trail via a path overlooking the lake.
In the spring and summer, the leaves are plentiful, offering some relaxing shade while you hike.
You'll be lead through meadows and woods, and I definitely recommend stopping to smell the flowers (sometimes literally) along the way. You could turn a three-and-a-half-hour hike into a full day if you play your cards right!

Salamonie Lake itself is beautiful and makes for an excellent backdrop.
The trail is noted to be very well-marked, though at times following snowmelt or rainfall it can get a bit muddy - so plan on nature being present when you go out in it!
Since this is a lengthy hike, I must stress the importance of packing plenty of water; yes, the trail is shady, but not all of it - and even still, the ambient temperature can get awfully hot with humidity included.
The best time to do this hike is early in the morning, and during the week if you prefer to run into less other folks on the trail.
I am happy to report that there's no bloodshed required for this adventure.
