It's pretty hard to find someone who doesn't like ice cream. Come on! It's seriously one of the greatest desserts ever invented by mankind, and lucky for those of us in the Midwest, we just so happen to be a paradise for lovers of delicious ice cream. The best ice cream in Indiana is a pretty steep title to work for, but that doesn't stop numerous amazing shops from giving it the ol' college try. Anyone looking for the best desserts in Indiana - especially if size matters - ought to check out a little place called Cabell's, where the portions are gigantic and the pleasures are many.
Cabell's Ice Cream is found in Shelbyville, and to say it's a labor of love is an understatement.
Like most ice cream shops in Indiana, Cabell's is seasonal - typically, it's open from March through the end of November, and this year is no different.
Cabell's is famous for a couple of things:
First, the ice cream here is TO DIE FOR. It is the pinnacle of creamy, delicious excellence and you can never go wrong with a cup, cone, or sundae.
Second, if you so desire, the portions are GIGANTIC.
Lovers of ice cream may not even be able to finish the gargantuan XL/XXL cones you'll find here; each one is tailor-made to fit your ice creamiest desires, and despite the enormous size, you'll probably still be wanting more by the end of it all.
Cabell's Ice Cream has been an Indiana family tradition for well over a decade now as a family-owned and operated little hole-in-the-wall you'll never find anywhere else.
The flavor options are both traditional and a little wacky; get yourself a gigantic chocolate ice cream cone, or maybe get a little crazy with it and get a giant vanilla cone rolled in Fruity Pebbles, a twisty flavor cone combining two ideas you'd have never thought to put together, or literally anything else (everything - EVERYTHING - is amazing).
Of course, if you're the kind of person who prefers to eat dessert when it's time (not us), there are plenty of delicious, classic American food options to devour first, like the best chili dog you'll ever eat.
Cabell's is something of a local phenomenon; year after year, when the place opens for the season, the same folks tend to be waiting outside to order their traditional "beginning of the season" delights. Come say hi - everyone's friendly and they don't bite (unless you're made of ice cream, then all bets are off).
So, seriously, for the best ice cream in Indiana - if not the entire Midwest - come try Cabell's.
You'll wonder why it took you so long to show up in the first place - and then you'll never be able to stop showing up after that!
