Indiana is pretty awesome, isn't it? I mean, I think I can speak for most Hoosiers when I say that anyone who hates this place either grew up here and never left (in which case, bloom where you're planted - Indiana is awesome!) or they've simply never been here in the first place (in which case, that's just, like, your opinion, man). Many of the small towns in Indiana are an absolute delight, and they all come filled top-to-bottom with amazing natural attractions, too. Take, for example, the town of Bloomington. It's gorgeous, and it makes for an awesome day trip. Let's plan one - and I've even gone ahead and found the downright best cabin rental in Bloomington, Indiana to rest our heads while we're here.
Bloomington, Indiana, is southwest of Indianapolis and is technically the 7th-largest city in the state.
But, given its population of under 80,000, Bloomington absolutely qualifies as a small town when compared to even small cities with three times the population. It's a friendly place where there's always something going on.

Lovers of the natural world will enjoy a visit to Indiana University's enchanting Arboretum - but don't wander too far! There's a whole day to be had.
One of the many must-dos while you're here include the legendary Bloomington Farmers Market, which sees thousands of visitors per year and is one of the town's oldest pastimes.
It's easily one of the most popular markets in Indiana thanks to its large size and numerous vendors. It's located conveniently close to the city of Indianapolis without being IN the city, and it's a much-loved spot for locals and visitors alike to gather and enjoy. Bloomington is also home to some truly excellent wineries that rival some of Europe's best; if you didn't realize Indiana has wine country, I'm about to blow your mind.
There is more than one winery in Bloomington, but the fan favorite among visitors and natives appears to definitely be Oliver Winery, which offers tastings and tours. You won't be able to resist taking a bottle or three home with you!

We’re going to kick off this day trip with a little bit of history. This is the first state capital of Indiana after all. Start at the Corydon Historic District and Town Square, the heart of this small town. Surrounded by historic buildings and shaded by large trees, this area feels like stepping back in time. The Corydon Capitol State Historic Site, Indiana’s first state capitol building, is where government business was conducted from 1816 until 1825 when the capital moved to Indianapolis. The beautifully preserved limestone building now serves as a museum, and guided tours offer a fascinating look into early Indiana politics.

Nearby, you’ll find the Constitution Elm, a towering tree under which the state’s first constitution was drafted in 1816. After a morning of sightseeing, it’s time to refuel. Head back to the town square and grab lunch at The Old Capitol Tea Room or Frederick’s Cafe, two local favorites. The Old Capitol Tea Room offers a unique Victorian-style experience, complete with tea service and a seasonal menu of sandwiches, soups, and desserts. Frederick’s Cafe, on the other hand, is beloved for its hearty comfort food, from burgers and sandwiches to classic Midwestern dishes.
Corydon is home to stunning natural landscapes, including some of Indiana’s best cave systems. Just outside of town, you can visit Squire Boone Caverns, where you’ll find an awe-inspiring cave network filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and underground rivers. Founded by Squire Boone, the brother of famous frontiersman Daniel Boone, this site is a natural and historical wonder. Guided tours lead you through the caverns and offer insights into the geology and history of the caves. After your tour, explore the nearby Pioneer Village, where you can learn about 1800s life and even watch a working grist mill in action.
For dinner, stay in the heart of Corydon with a stop at 1816 Modern Kitchen & Drinks if you haven’t been there yet. This restaurant combines Southern classics and Asian flavors all with a local twist. It's perfect for a casual meal after a busy day.
Afterward, take a final stroll around the square to soak in the small-town charm of Corydon. The historic buildings and quiet streets are especially lovely in the evening light, creating a perfect end to your day.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L.
