Looking for interesting but unique ways to kill some time? Maybe it's a lazy day off, and you don't really want to stay home, but you're not about to go hiking or anything strenuous, either. Well, you're in luck, because there's a super-unique thing to do to kill all the time you need in Benton County, Indiana: what was Indiana's very first wind farm now offers tours for curious visitors. All wind farms are nice, but this wind farm in Indiana takes it just a little above and beyond.
Editor's Note: Unfortunately, since time of publication, the wind farm no longer offers tours.
The Benton County Wind Farm was established in 2003, and ever since then, it's provided copious amounts of electricity for countless Indiana households.
In total, there are 560 wind turbines in Benton County - including the 87 at the specific farm you're able to tour.
The tour opens with an educational video before guests are encouraged to ask questions.
After the Q & A, you'll be taken out into the field, where you'll be able to appreciate the massive scale of these machines up-close.
You'll learn all kinds of interesting things, such as the fact that the column which holds the blades up is 240 feet tall.
The blades are 138 feet long and, when traveling at 20 RPM, the tips of them slice through the air at an astonishing 185 miles per hour.
From far away, they certainly don't look like they're going that fast, but you'll definitely see it when you stand beneath one.
Tours of this wind farm began in 2010, and were an instant smash-hit. It's still doing very well today.
Visitors come from all over Indiana as well as the entire United States to learn about these intriguing suppliers of clean energy.
Tours run from April to October every year, weather permitting, of course.
We're not sure what it is, but there's something so cathartic about watching those blades rotating, making their gentle "swish-swish-swish" noise.
It's remarkably easy to kill a whole afternoon here, simply hanging out and enjoying the tranquility.
Sunsets at any given wind farm are pretty impressive, so make sure to visit when you'll get a great photo op, too!
It's important to remember that tours must be booked in advance; they do not currently offer walk-up tours. Make sure to double-check their website to find the most up-to-date booking information and visiting hours.
Would you tour a wind farm for the day? What will you daydream about?
