Few People Know A Race Track Once Occupied The Land Of This Forest Preserve In Illinois
Raceway Woods in Carpentersville, Illinois offers a moderately difficult hike with historical significance, featuring remnants of the Meadowdale International Raceway.
Illinois is filled with fascinating hikes including ones with a bit of history. As you hike along the Trail of Tears, the trails on Sylvan Island, or around the old Joliet Iron and Steel Works, you can learn about the past while spending time in nature. If you love to explore historical sites, head to Carpentersville where you can hike on the land that once belonged to an old race track.
The former Meadowdale International Raceway is located within Raceway Woods in Carpentersville. The raceway was in operation from 1958 through 1968 when it saw its last race.
The Raceway Woods Trails is a partially-paved 2.7-mile loop that's rated as moderately difficult. It also experiences a moderate amount of traffic, popular with both hikers and bikers.
Raceway Woods Forest Preserve is a 122-acre parcel of land where the raceway's track once wound its way through. It's a fantastic place to come for nature, bird watching, hiking, biking, and history.
Portions of the original 3.27-mile track can be seen throughout Raceway Woods as well as an old oil silo and part of the Monza Wall, which was once a 180-degree curve along the track.
The silo was once in danger of being demolished as nature started to reclaim it and vandals caused damage to it. However, protests to save the structure worked, funds were raised, and the silo was ultimately saved and restored.
Illinois is a nice, quiet state in the American Midwest right up on the Great Lakes, featuring one of the country's most iconic cities (what's up, Chicago?). Also, the views and features of these particular hiking trails in Illinois are so amazingly jaw-dropping that I'm not sure why exactly these trails are so little-known... but perhaps we can fix that. Snuggled near Charleston, Illinois, is a delightful three-and-a-half-hour hike known as the Lake Charleston Loop that's said to be moderately difficult and features some of the coolest views in the state. Ideally, one would visit between February and December, though the place is most definitely open year-round. It's very well-marked and absolutely beautiful, and many folks mention the awe the vistas provide. This one's a loop trail, so you should end up right where you began (as long as you finish the whole thing.) During the warmer months, I definitely recommend bug spray and plenty of water. Enjoy!
The Red Fox Trail is an easy two-mile hike perfect for families and folks with mobility issues. It's easy to access, fun to hike, and, goodness, it's beautiful! With excellent lake views, nicely manicured pathways, and the occasional bench to sit down and rest upon, this hike is perfect for anyone looking for an easy afternoon outdoors in Illinois. If you ever find yourself forlornly coveting a beach day, consider this hiking trail - it's wonderful for sinking toes into warm sand!
Kickapoo State Park is one of our most tragically underrated state parks, and the trails that weave throughout it like life-giving veins are a treat and a half. At just under nine miles long, the Kickapoo State Park Trail is the second lengthiest trip on this list - but don't let this fool you. It's not terribly difficult, either. Should you choose not to do the entire thing, that's alright - you can always do it in chunks and segments. The foliage is incredible in spring, summer, and especially fall, and the winter brings with it a certain kind of wonderland I can't put into words. It is what it is - and what it is is magic.
Okay, sure - the GORC Bike Trails are definitely more catered to bicyclists, but hiking and running are welcome as well (and the wildlife spotting is second to none.) To get as close to by yourself as you can get, show up early in the morning during the week - heck, do that for every hike on this list, and you can't go wrong! The trail is well-maintained, even, and requires little effort to complete. This one's perfect for anyone seeking some great afternoon and/or day trip ideas in Illinois.
The fabled Arrowhead Lake Trail is a doozy, but at least it's a brief one! At just barely over two miles long, this hike is known for the diverse array of critters you can spot from it. Views of the lake are sure to amaze you, and thanks to its being mostly flat, even the little ones can easily do this hike and have a blast while they're at it. Living life outdoors in Illinois is a special treat... one we're all honored to get to have.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L.
