Man, I just love general stores. They always feel like a step back in time. And no one ever leaves without getting a piece (or several) of the old-time candy. There are still some general stores in existence in Illinois. Here are nine you will want to visit:
1. Outpost General Store (Wayne)
Editor's Note: Outpost General Store is permanently closed.
Here you can find vintage and antique wares as well as grocery. It is also a nice place to stop for breakfast or lunch.
2. The General Store (Greenwood)
You can find a little bit of everything here, but you will love the food. Wisconsin ice cream, Goose Island root beer floats and Boars Head sandwiches make this a must-stop.
3. Mansfield General Store (Mansfield)
This is in a building built in 1895 which has housed a general store since 1896. Wow. Things have evolved, as they now have video rentals. People love the snack shop, which has some good sandwiches and 24 flavors of ice cream.
4. Naperville General Store (Naperville)
Wait a second...a general store...in Naperville? In downtown Naperville? Yeah. They offer all sort of nostalgic gifts and classic toys, but also some Naperville-themed gifts as well.
5. Ozark General Store (Ozark)
This is a true general store. You can get your gas, and also get some bare necessities like things for the home and yard. But also get yourself some hot food. One-stop shopping.
6. 1904 General Store (Alton)
A landmark building, it was purchased to become a general store and the 1904 references the building's use in the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis. The building's handcrafted German Black Forest woodwork was on exhibit at the World's Fair. Nowadays, the building is a general store selling things like gifts and candy.
7. Millersburg General Store (Pocahontas)
Editor's Note: Millersburg General Store is permanently closed.
Yes, there is a Pocahontas, Illinois. And now I can't get "Colors of the Wind" out of my head. ANYWAY. Millersburg is a convenience store, and they also offer some pretty good breakfast and brunch.
8. Thompson's General Store (Camargo)
Editor's Note: Thompson's General Store is permanently closed.
This place was opened in 1946, and people keep coming back because of quality goods and excellent service. They are known for their great cuts of meat.
9. ENJOY, An Urban General Store (Chicago)
Yes, general stores evolve. This is a fabulous place to just walk around, because they have so many quirky and fun gifts.
