Hiding in the Camas Prairie in northern Idaho is the little town of White Bird. Home to approximately 90 people, White Bird is one of the most historic and fascinating towns in Idaho. There's a lot of stories hiding in this town, and many people are surprised to find that it even exists. One of the town's most notable aspects is the White Bird Grade, sometimes referred to as Old Highway 95. This road is considered one of the oldest highways in Idaho. Along with boasting some unique history behind its construction, the old highway is one of the most beautiful drives you'll ever take here in the Gem State. It even leads you to an old battlefield that is nothing short of utterly serene. You'll definitely want to accomplish this beautiful drive at some point during your time here in Idaho.
Not a lot goes on in the sleepy little town of White Bird. In fact, most people don't even realize it's there until they're driving right over it. However, the town does play a prominent role in the White Bird Grade—one of Idaho's oldest and most scenic roads.
The White Bird Grade is the most prominent stretch of road on Highway 95. It peacefully winds itself out of the northern part of White Bird and heads up to the very top of White Bird Hill. People who drive along this road quickly realize why this is considered one of Idaho's most unique stretches of highway.
As it winds up the hill, the highway is loaded with curves and switchbacks. It's definitely not the easiest road to traverse. However, this was the only road to connect the northern part of Idaho to the southern part for nearly 40 years.
If people wanted to travel up or down through the state, they had no choice but to take this road. The "new" Highway 95 was completed in 1975 and included the construction of the iconic White Bird Bridge which made the journey north or south a lot easier for drivers.
This old stretch of highway has an undeniably unique history, but its the views that will blow you away. The panoramas of the surrounding hills and prairie will leave you in total awe of Idaho's majestic beauty.
If you do find yourself driving along this road, be sure to stop at the White Bird Hill Summit. The summit contains an overlook into the canyon below where the Nez Perce War occurred in 1877.
This famous battle between the U.S. Army and the natives may have happened over a century ago, but seeing the battlefield in-person is a solemn yet extraordinary experience. The views of the canyon are truly breathtaking and serene.
