Idaho has scores of fabulous things to do for both visitors and natives. From the highest point in the state to the gently lapping lake shores of the Panhandle, you’ll never run out of ways to spice up your weekends and explore our wonderful Idahome.
Of all the ways to drink in the beauty of the Gem State, scenic cruises on our pristine lakes are no doubt a local favorite. But there’s one particularly special Idaho journey to add to your adventure list: a day trip cruise to the ice age origins of Lake Pend Oreille, to an overlooked delta on Idaho's rugged outskirts, and drink in the magnificent beauty of Idaho's largest lake from a whole new perspective... right on the water, and all in one day. Ready to learn more?
For the perfect, relaxing day trip, it doesn't get much more idyllic than a trip around Lake Pend Oreille from the warm comfort of the historic Shawnodese.
As the largest lake in the state and surrounded by the naturally flawless beauty of North Idaho, there's seemingly no end to the picturesque panoramas you'll see from the water. But add on the breathtaking wildlife, fresh lake breeze, and the gentle, relaxing current and you'll find yourself swept away by Idaho's very own miniature "ocean."
But only one tour offered on the lake has been named the captain and first mate's own personal favorite: the Clark Fork Delta Cruise.
This single tour doles out two separate adventures that will positively enchant you:
First, a trip around the lake to enjoy picture-perfect wildlife scenes, mesmerizing mountainscapes, and the natural relaxation of the mirror-like open water.
Second, a trip up the Clark Fork Delta near the Montana border, where you'll see the fantastic rock formations that remain from the ice age that originally formed the Pend Oreille.
On a sunny fall afternoon, the Clark Fork Delta is a place of astonishing beauty and easily one of the most unique ecosystems in the state. Yellow-green grasses glow against the perfect-blue of the Clark Fork River as it empties into Lake Pend Oreille.
A detour down the braided river channels reveals a surprising wealth of eagle nests, redheaded ducks, loons, owls, and a bevy of golden cottonwood trees in their season. A peek into the depths of the crystalline waters will also showcase the underwater fronds that provide habitat and feeding grounds for dozens of fish species.
Needless to say, your experience here will be an up close and personal one!
It's not unusual to see eagles fighting mid-air or a buck swim across the water. A camera is a must!
This family-friendly adventure launches from the Kramer Marina at East Hope rather than Sandpoint's City Beach, and runs from May to mid-June and mid-September to mid-October.
Along the way, you'll be treated to the history of Lake Pend Oreille and pointed in the right direction to the best wildlife viewing spots. Plus, an optional lunch will keep hunger at bay, and for the child at heart - the opportunity to become Captain of the Day and steer the Shawnodese straight and true!
No matter the weather, this must-do journey is guaranteed to be one of unforgettable beauty.
Reservations are required, and we recommend following the Lake Pend Oreille Cruises Facebook page for up-to-date details.
