Every year, a final tribute to summer and a spectacular kickoff into fall takes place near downtown Boise. Here, in Ann Morrison Park, dozens of whimsical hot air balloons fill the sky in a five-day kaleidoscope of color that can only be described as...well, indescribable.
The Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic, started in 1991, is a family-friendly event that's not only a true throwback to a simpler time, but a breathtaking experience that is also uniquely Idaho. As these colorful balloons launch simultaneously they fill the sky of Idaho's capital city with the heart and soul of our state, bring the community together, and create a vibrant and picture-perfect scene, fitting of the City of Trees. And -- as these stunning photos show -- it's like nothing you've ever seen before.
Every September, around 50 hot air balloons of every size, shape, and color imaginable fill the sky in the heart of Idaho's capital city.
Visitors and residents near the City of Trees can see them from nearly every corner of the valley, forming a breathtaking backdrop against Boise's already picturesque natural scenery.
The classic festival starts with the ceremonious inflating of the massive balloons.

The first lift off is timed to within 30 seconds of each other, creating a simple but photo-worthy scene that is as calming as it is beautiful.
Part of the festival also includes a contest for the "Governor's Cup," which incorporates a scavenger hunt-like challenge between balloons to test each pilot's aviation skills.
Driving around the city, you'll see balloons scattered all over the place... including aiming themselves at porta-potties for large-scale bowling.
It's a photographer's dream.
The mid-point of the festival is the magical "Nite Glow Spectacular," which marks just one highlight of this fantastic event.
Under the cover of darkness and synchronized with music, the balloons come alive in bursts of light, forming massive, glowing lanterns.
It's absolutely wonderful.
And with a final send-off, the balloons take their last flight over the city on Sunday.
