This nature preserve is a rare hidden gem that few know about but you'll be glad you took the time to see. Check out what beauty awaits:
Located in Island Park, Flat Ranch Preserve is a beautiful swath of land in an area known as Greater Yellowstone. Admission is free to this stunning preserve, making it the perfect place to stop and enjoy some completely unspoiled scenery.
You'll find the preserve located right off Highway 20. The preserve sees a lot of visitors on their way or coming back from Yellowstone, but there's plenty of nature and wildlife here to warrant a standalone visit.
Flat Ranch Preserve is most notably a fantastic habitat for nesting birds. You'll often see bird species like sandhill cranes or long-billed curlews soaring through the sky above the preserve. Bring binoculars to see them up close!
The preserve is also noted for its stunning display of wildflowers and native plants. In the spring and summer, visitors are treated to fields of vibrant camas, sego lily, and mule's ear for as far as the eye can see.
The preserve's location at the headwaters of the Henry's Fork River also makes it a prime fishing destination. Fly fishing is allowed on the preserve, so come and try your hand at catching some native Yellowstone cutthroat trout.
This place is an especially great destination for families. During the summer the preserve typically holds a variety of educational programs for children. It's never too early to instill a love of nature!
It's amazing to think that places as beautiful as this are just a short drive away for Idahoans. Immerse yourself in one of the most pristine ecosystems that the state has to offer and plan a visit to Flat Ranch Preserve.
