Fire lookout towers always make for a unique escape here in Idaho but there's one in particular that offers an especially amazing experience. If you've been dreaming of that perfect mountain escape, look no further than the Crystal Peak Lookout near Fernwood.
The Crystal Peak Lookout was originally constructed in Eastern Washington in 1959. It operated there for decades until it was eventually moved to Crystal Ridge in Northern Idaho in 1983. There it sat empty for several more years, until a couple years ago when it was purchased by Kristie Wolfe.
Wolfe immediately set to work and began giving new life to the historic fire lookout tower. She completely remodeled the structure and even turned a nearby shed into a wood-fired sauna. Today, the tower looks absolutely fantastic towering over the landscape at 4,700-feet elevation.
Guests can reserve a mountain getaway in this dreamy tower through Airbnb. Although, you'll want to be aware that visiting this tower is far from your typical bed and breakfast experience.
Located in the remote backcountry of North Idaho, this fire lookout tower is as remote as can be. Four wheel drive is required when visiting during the summer, and travel gets even trickier during wintertime. However, guests can reserve a ride in a vintage SnowCat to transport them to the tower—complete with cups of hot cocoa and blankets for keeping warm.
Getting to the tower certainly requires some effort, but it's so worth it when you finally arrive. The tower itself is absolutely beautiful, boasting 200-square-feet of space that contains a bed, wood burning stove, chairs, and a table. It's absolutely charming and will make you feel right at home.
However, it's the small things that make staying in this tower such a memorable adventure. Guests can treat themselves to the small library of Idaho-themed books, a trail mix bar, and coffee from a local roaster inside the tower's cabin.
And don't worry about getting cold. The wood-fired sauna will not only keep you warm on those frigid winter nights, but it's also a great way to relax and rejuvenate your body and mind after a long day of exploring. This place may just be the closest thing there is to heaven on earth!
Winter is the perfect time to plan an escape to this gorgeous fire lookout in the mountains. Whether you're looking for an exciting adventure or pure relaxation, the Crystal Peak Lookout delivers it all. Learn more about it by visiting the Airbnb listing here.
