It's nearly the most colorful time of the year! Idaho's magnificent fall foliage is always a highlight of the autumn season - it definitely makes saying goodbye to summer a little easier. Of course, timing is everything when it comes to catching those colorful fall colors, so read on to learn about when and where you can expect to see fall foliage at its peak in Idaho this upcoming season.
According to the 2021 Fall Foliage Map, Idaho is just a few short weeks away from being covered in autumnal hues. Most of the Gem State will be in "partial" or "near peak" by the week of September 27.
If you visit the SmokyMountains website, you can use the interactive map to slide from week to week and see the predicted progression of fall. Similar to any meteorological forecast, leaf predictions are never 100% accurate. However, it definitely makes for a great start when planning for fall adventures!
The fall foliage map is super easy to use. Near peak and peak foliage are represented by red and maroon. The brown color indicates that an area is past peak for fall foliage.
Although parts of the state - like the very top of the panhandle - will begin peaking in September, it won't be until early October that most of the state will be covered in peak or near peak fall foliage. Beginning October 4th, you can expect to see colorful displays of yellow, red, and orange all around the state!
As is typical, Southern and Central Idaho will begin to show fall foliage first, with North Idaho following closely behind. By the week of October 11, most of the state will be in past peak while parts of the panhandle are at peak.
